Runner’s Knee

A runner’s knee is a common injury among runners and other athletes who perform repetitive knee movements. This condition causes irritation and inflammation in the iliotibial band, a tendon that runs along the outside of the thigh and attaches to the knee. It is typically caused by overuse and, if left untreated, can lead to persistent pain and discomfort. Runner’s knee is not limited to runners; cyclists, walkers, and even people who frequently climb stairs can experience this condition.

What injuries Does Runner’s Knee Cause?

The main issue of runner’s knee is sharp or burning pain on the outside of the knee, especially during or after running. This pain may develop gradually and often worsens when bending or straightening the knee, such as during running, cycling, or stair climbing. In some cases, the pain can radiate to the outside of the thigh or lower leg. Other symptoms include stiffness in the knee and a feeling of weakness in the joint, which can affect the knee’s stability during walking or running.

What Causes Runner’s Knee?

Runner’s knee is usually caused by overuse, often due to a combination of factors such as poor running technique, inadequate warm-up, or weak hip and glute muscles. Running on sloped or uneven surfaces can also contribute to the development of runner’s knee, as well as wearing poor footwear that doesn’t provide adequate support. Additionally, anatomical factors such as leg length discrepancy or overpronation of the foot can increase tension on the iliotibial band, leading to irritation and inflammation. A gradual buildup of training and attention to technique can help prevent this injury.

What is our treatment for runner’s knee?

Runner’s knee often stems from improper knee alignment. We examine foot positioning and assess whether an insole can provide correction. In some cases, muscle strengthening is needed, and we recommend additional physiotherapy. A combination of exercises and insole therapy helps alleviate knee pain.
